Scalable & PCI-Compliant Payment Processing Solution

Challenge

Providing debit card, credit card and gift card processing services for online merchants may sound straightforward, but these transactions have to adhere to strict and precise PCI DSS regulations. The stakes are high: Non-compliance can result in fines, audits, a damaged reputation or worse.

On top of data security requirements, our client had a unique situation of being overloaded with transactions for about 2 hours a day during peak usage periods. That’s an undetermined, unpredictable amount of traffic that can create a bottleneck, ruin the customer experience and waste dollars.

The company came to SPINEN with a need for a scalable, elastic cloud solution that could fulfill the compliance obligations and perform on demand. We were up for the challenge.

Solution

The DevOps team utilized Amazon Web Services (AWS) to build out a custom Virtual Private Cloud that met PCI regulations and scaled to meet the fluid demand. Our recipes delete old servers and provision new ones every 3 days—much more frequently than the minimum stated in the PCI requirements. The flexibility of AWS Auto Scaling allows for added capacity and improved processing power only when it is needed, increasing productivity and output and lowering costs.

SPINEN’s virtual cloud solution enabled the client to overcome the unpredictability of peak transaction volume to process millions of payments. All without a hitch, all while adhering to the highest security standards.
