Gresco Utility Supply and Spinen
“In my years in the technology space, I can tell you with certainty that almost no company stands out like Spinen does in serving their customers,” he said. “Often in the technology space, companies just frustrate you and make you disappointed. That is rarely the case with Spinen.”
That’s not a throwaway compliment. That’s a data point from someone who’s been comparing notes for a long time.
Where It Started
When Scott first engaged Spinen more than two decades ago, Gresco Utility Supply was a smaller, simpler operation. The need was straightforward: supplement the internal team where gaps existed, bring in expertise for specific projects, and fill the spaces where in-house staff couldn’t go deep enough fast enough.
That simplicity was exactly the right foundation. When a relationship is built on trust and competence rather than contracts and feature lists, it tends to grow into something different.
“That trust through that relationship was how it all started,” Scott said. “And then quickly I realized it was really the people behind the team in that trusted relationship that would make it a long, lasting relationship and really a friendship.”
More Than a Help Desk
Twenty-two years in, Spinen isn’t just plugging gaps anymore.
They’ve been Gresco’s first level of help desk support, and a responsive one at that. When one of Scott’s district managers reached out with a support issue recently, the turnaround was fast enough that he mentioned it unprompted. In IT support, that’s the standard for “good”: clients notice how quickly you move, not how long they waited.
But the work has grown well beyond tickets and troubleshooting.
Spinen helped Gresco navigate its first virtualization servers and led the migration to the cloud. And when AI started moving from conference-circuit hype to a legitimate business conversation, Jimmy Puckett, Spinen’s President and CEO, came to Gresco’s office personally — not to pitch, but to help the leadership team think through what AI actually means for their future.
“They’re not just kind of a yes man, which I think works well with the way we operate,” Scott said. “They’re going to give us advice and say, this is a good fit, or this isn’t a good fit for us. Or have you considered this?”
That’s the role Spinen plays: not a vendor chasing approvals, but a partner willing to push back when pushing back is the right call.
Why It’s Lasted
Two-decade partnerships don’t happen by accident, and they don’t survive on service level agreements alone.
Scott points to something simpler and harder to manufacture: shared values.
“At Gresco, we really value people and we value relationships, and we hope we don’t just say that, that it’s a real thing for us. And that’s what I’ve always seen embodied at Spinen also,” he said. “The relationship piece is what has stood out for the many, many years, where it’s made it a partnership and even a friendship.”
When your IT partner treats your business like their own, you don’t have to manage the relationship. You just get to rely on it.
“They’re truly a partner. They’re truly coming alongside you. And when they don’t live up to the word, they try to make it right. They really do.”
Gresco Utility Supply has been a Spinen client for over 22 years. They are a full-service electrical distribution company headquartered in the southeastern United States.
